I CAN HEAR the bass pounding from outside the building as we approach the club. Tess and Sophie are ahead of me as we round the corner and see a ridiculous line to get in. Not expecting a wait, I remind myself that it’s ten o’clock on a Friday night, and this is what people do when they aren’t at home alone watching reruns on TV.
“Shit,” I hear Sophie mutter as we watch the line not move.
As promised, Jax called me later that night as I was getting ready for bed. He wanted to thank me for the flowers again and let me know how much his mother enjoyed them. He also let me know the details about Friday night.
“I could pick you up,” he offered.
“Thanks, but Tess and Sophie are coming. I’ll meet you there.” Our fourth, Lana, has her own night planned with her favorite bartender.
“Okay, tomorrow then,” his voice sounding faintly disappointed.
“Tomorrow.”
But now, seeing this line at the door, I’m beginning to think I may not see him at all.
“Fuck this,” Tess says, strutting her way to the bouncer.
I watch as she taps him on the shoulder and leans in closer, speaking directly into his ear. The bouncer nods a few times before leaning back, raising his eyebrows in surprise. A smile come across Tess’s face, and the bouncer grins then starts to laugh. He shakes his head a little and moves aside to open the door for her. Tess taps the bouncer softly on the chest a few times before looking over at us, beckoning us to follow her inside.
“What did you say to him?” Sophie asks once inside.
Tess smirks. “Nothing I haven’t said once before to get what I want.”
I shake my head and follow the girls further into the club. Vice is a popular club with private booths offering bottle service on the second level that overlooks the massive dance floor. Behind the bar, a cascading water wall with changing colored lights shining through reaches up to the ceiling. Loud music is blaring from speakers sitting in every corner. A DJ is spinning from a platform perched slightly above the crowd, mixing current hits with backdrops of music from the nineties. Right now, a Selena Gomez song is mixed with Culture Beat’s Mr. Vain. You wouldn’t think it would work but weirdly, it does. In front of us is a massive dance floor full of bodies moving and grinding to the mix.
I look above us to the private booths. Each one is filled and waitresses in tight black dresses are walking by with trays full of bottles, glasses and garnishes. Tess yells over the music, asking if I’ve spotted Jax yet. I haven’t, but I’m not surprised with how many people are here.
I feel a tap on my shoulder and turn to see Dylan, wide eyed and happy. Gone is the suit and tie, and in its place are black pants and a black button up shirt, the top two buttons undone.
“Well look who decided to stop by and join the fun,” he yells over the music.
